I’m looking forward to showing you some of the projects I work on through the eyes of a current Library Science student. I am also responsible for creating EAC-CPF biographical data for our Nobel Laureate project, and whatever side projects that come up. I work with Amanda Nelson assisting her with processing collections which involves creating a collection plan, inventorying the collection, assessing the condition of the collection, refoldering, rehousing, and creating the collections online finding aid. Bookstacks student assistant archive#The archive offers me a great opportunity to get hands on experience and apply the information and skills I am learning in class in a real-world setting. I started working here back in May 2017 and have loved every second of it. I am in my first semester of graduate school at the University of Maryland in the Library and Information Science program. Bookstacks student assistant movie#In my free time I’m an avid movie watcher, thrift shopper extraordinaire and a collector of ticket stubs I’ve used.Įmily Martin, Archives Assistant (right): I’m Emily Martin, and I have the pleasure of working with the archives collections here at the Niels Bohr Library & Archives. I’m excited to share my many “mini adventures” as I work through processing and identifying varies photographs. In addition, in a long running project the visual archives are going through a metadata clean-up of all the images available on our website. During this process I am creating collections while rehousing photographs and providing preservation recommendations. While working with Audrey Lengel, Photo Librarian, I’ve taken on the responsibility of working through the backlog of photos that have been donated to the archives. Meggers Gallery of Nobel Laureates, creating an online exhibit by collating the metadata of all the portraits in the collection. As a project assistant, I worked on the W.F. Sara Horn, Photo Project Assistant (middle): Working in the Emilio Segrè Visual Archives, I review images of physicist and physics related photographs all day. Outside of the library, I read (of course), bake sweets, play and teach the western classical flute, and attempt to converse with my dogs in Norwegian. Conservation is one of my personal favorites, as I get to “heal” deteriorating books with art supplies. I assist Allison Rein, the librarian and Assistant Director of Special Collections, with copy-cataloging donations, assigning call numbers to books from NBL’s custom classification scheme, shelving books and journals, maintaining and beautifying the stacks area, and a large variety of side projects, such as book conservation, digitization, and weeding potential donation book lists against what we already have in the collection. Although I know little about physics (though I’m learning quite a bit!), I am thrilled to be working with the fascinatingly unique collection and environment here at the Niels Bohr Library & Archives, the flavor of which I will endeavor to share with you throughout this upcoming month on social media. I draw on experience from my background in academic and public libraries for this job.
